10 Common Misconceptions About Poker

If you play poker regularly, and you understand the game exactly as it is, you probably know that there are misconceptions among people with no direct experience. You’ve probably heard many of these erroneous viewpoints. If you are like me, you spend a fair amount of time explaining to uninformed people precisely what poker is and what it is not. For the benefit of all, this article will clear up some of the more common misconceptions.

Conversely, if you never play poker, and your entire experience of the game is what you read in print and see in movies, you probably have many wrong ideas. That is to be expected. Please, allow me to enlighten you on a few points.

1. Poker is not casual. Many people think of poker as a mellow social pastime, where friends sit around drinking, laughing and whooping it up. In fact, there is nothing friendly about poker. You can be cordial with others at your table (and you should be), but the game itself is vicious. Played properly, it is a form of warfare. It is an aggressive battle for domination. I think of poker as “violence, without the violence.”

2. A poker face is not the main requirement to play. I cannot tell you how often I hear this misconception. Nearly every time I mention poker to someone whose only exposure to the game is the media, I hear some lame comment like, “Oh, you must have a good poker face.” No, a poker face, a steely-eyed gaze, is not the essence of skillful play. True, you do not want to be sending tells to your opponents, but the so-called poker face is widely misunderstood. The ability to create a poker face does not make you a poker player. Consider this: When you play poker on the Internet, everyone has a poker face.

3. Winning at poker is not easy. Blame television for this one. You generally see only the winners on television. Those who win get the most exposure and are most often featured. The final table in a tournament, for example, is comprised solely of players who are winners. Very little attention is paid to those who lose, say nothing of the vast majority who bust out of tournaments without fanfare. Playing well takes a huge amount of study, discipline and practice. Succeeding in the world of poker is far from automatic.

4. Women can play. The idea that poker is exclusively a man’s game is another falsehood. Years ago, many well-known poker authors wrote that women do not have the killer instinct necessary to play well. Time has proven that theory wrong. Nowadays, women compete at every level, and plenty of skilled women win in cash games and tournaments. The idea that poker is a man’s game is laughable these days, and I wouldn’t have included it among common misconceptions were it not for the fact that many still believe it.

5. Poker is not a game of mathematics. In blackjack, for example, you always have one best move at any moment. Your task is to determine what that move is. If you have 13 and the dealer is showing an ace, then you should hit. That is always true, no matter who is seated at the table or what they are doing. Poker is different. In poker, you must take other players into account, and the mathematically preferable move may not be wise. Top caliber players often debate what is the best move in a particular situation. Poker cannot be reduced to mathematics because there are too many human factors.

6. Poker is a not game of luck. This is perhaps the most common misconception, and it is dead wrong. Luck averages out. Over time, all players receive the same percentage of good hands and bad hands. The difference is what players do with those hands. A good player will maximize the amount won with good hands and minimize the amount lost with bad hands. The key element that separates winners from losers, over time, is not the cards dealt, but the decisions made. Stu Unger, three-time World Series of Poker champion, put it this way: “In cards, the luck always balances out. The good players are going to win. Any player that thinks card playing is a game of luck, I’ll show you a fool. That’s what the losers always say. The winners don’t worry about the short term; we play for the long term.”

7. Cheating is not rampant. The prevalence of cheating is another incorrect impression held by many. In private backroom games, cheating does happen occasionally. But in modern casino cardrooms and high-profile tournaments, where most of today’s professionals play, cheating is virtually nonexistent. (Online poker, however, is a different story. It is possible to cheat when playing on the Internet, due to the nature of the technology. If you’d like to explore a particular way to cheat when playing online, click here: Poker Cheat.) Although cheating is technically possible in some situations, and it does happen, it is not nearly the factor that many people suppose. If you are hesitant to play poker out of fear of being cheated, you are overreacting.

8. Poker is not an addiction. No matter what the media would have you believe, the vast majority of poker enthusiasts play because they enjoy the game, not because they are hooked in some way. Sure, a tiny percentage of players do struggle with addiction, but they are people with an addictive personality, whether or not they play poker. We should not blame poker for someone’s compulsive behavior any more than we should blame sex for someone being a rapist.

9. Poker is not sleazy. There is nothing even remotely “underbelly” about the beautiful game of poker. A great many good and decent folks play for a wide variety of reasons, such as fun, challenge and personal betterment. Poker highlights the best of human interaction and calls into play the most honorable of human qualities, such as courage, sound reasoning and self-control. Poker is a wonderful way to build character.

10. Poker is not illegal. Most people with a functioning brain do not actually believe this, but the forces of misguided morality want you to think that the game of poker is against the law. It is not. Poker is not associated with crime in any way. Nor is it controlled by the mob. Not is it dangerous. You do not need to be on the lookout for gangsters. Or gunplay. No, you do not need to carry a sidearm and shoot your way out of the casino to protect your loot. You’ve been watching too many movies.

These are a few common misconceptions held by many in the public. If you encounter people with these ideas, please set them straight. But be understanding; it’s not their fault that they hold these incorrect viewpoints, which are passed off as fact everywhere in today’s media. It rests with us, intelligent members of the poker-playing community, to spread the truth regarding the magnificent game of poker.

Women and Poker Part Ii: the Exploitation of the Female Form

Some of the main hubs of poker are also the most sexualized cities in the United States, name New Orleans and then later Las Vegas. These cities are absolutely oozing with sex, and although this paper is not trying to make a moralistic argument decrying these wild cities’ lifestyles, much of these images have stuck to the game of poker itself. Perhaps this phenomenon would not be so bad if it played out evenly between the two sexes, but all one sees is the portrayal of partially disrobed women advertising for poker sites. One only needs to log onto the internet and search for “Women and Poker” to have a dozen women in bikinis immediately pop up on the screen.

In fact, yours truly actually did run a search specifically for “Women and Poker”, and here are some of the surprising results. In no particular order we present 10 of the most tasteful poker sites on the web:

-Pokerium Online Poker Room and Casino: The front page of this website is a model of good taste and restraint. Many of the searches yielded interesting results, but this website was head and shoulders ahead. Upon opening the home page one finds an illustration of a scantily clad brown-haired vixen with a flower in her hair(no real women were harmed during the production of this design). The interesting part of this drawing is that she is placed inside of a huge Ace of Clubs. In the middle of the card, where the woman is located, lies a very large club, and the stem of said club just happens to terminate in the center of the woman’s crotch. Although there is a possibility that this not-so-subtle innuendo was unintentional, we would not bet on it.

-Next on our list is the deliciously tasteful advertisement on for their “Babes & Bounties” tournament. To begin with, the title itself should be enough to ruffle the feathers of most women poker players. Then, the image used on the page is of a woman in a bikini top with money in the background behind her. And finally, for those players who aren’t sold by the picture in the middle, the site claims that “12 of the sexiest poker hostesses in the game” will be present at the table. It’s a good thing too, because most serious poker players refuse to play in tournaments with any less than 8 sexy poker hostesses. Finally, jus tto make sure that one can notice all the different features on the side, there is a picture of a woman on the left-hand side of the screen dressed in her rather unsupportive underwear lying down in front of a laptop with poker chips lying around her body. She is happily wearing a pair of flattering white high heeled shoes so that she can model at any moment during her poker game. A truly classy website., an up and coming online card room, is another tastefully crafted website, with nothing to offend save for their new “Topless Bonus”. The “Topless Bonus: The Shape of Things to Come” seems a stretch: with this promotion they will “top up” your account with a free 20% bonus. The stingy bonus does not only fall way short of the 200% bonuses floating around on various sites, it also offends the eye. They advertise it with a small silhouette of a woman, hardly exposing anything whatsoever. Why they chose to try and correlate a 20% with topless women is a mystery, but they surely went for it.

-Not to be outdone, Jungle Poker has its own female spokeswoman: none other than the lovely Cheynelle Fraser, a bartender/model who is now the official face of Jungle Poker. Why a poker site would need a sizzling hot model as a spokeswoman is a grand mystery. We suspect it is because the photos of Cheynelle – which include several excellent cleavage shots – surely have everything to do with poker and nothing with selling sexuality. Although the site may be using the good looks of beautiful Cheynelle to help promote their site, they are not just about T & A on their site: on the front page of the site they have an advertisement for their heads up Sit & Go tournaments, featuring two headshots of a man and a woman, both fully dressed, challenging each other to a card game. Hurray for equality!

-Europeans are no exception when it comes to using alluring images of the female form to help them sell their products. In a recent article published on, the author writes about the upcoming Great British Poker Tour, and the centerpiece image of this article is a nude woman relaxing in a bathtub full of poker chips. It’s a good thing that they posted this picture, because nothing says Great British Poker Tour better than a woman bathing nude in poker chips.

-The most morbid result found during the search came from on their rakeback advertisement, which features a frightening illustration of zombie woman in a corset, fishnet stockings, heels, and a short skirt using a rake to gather up some playing cards that must have fallen off a tree. Although the idea of having somebody literally raking poker cards is cute, we’re not sure about the need for a sexy undead woman.

-Gambling blog Oddjack paid homage to the women of poker in an article titled “Top 10 Sexiest Women of Poker”. This enlightening four part series takes the readers through their list of what they view as the sexiest women in the poker world. Just to give a small taste of their depictions of these women, we will go over the first three women they talk about. Each woman has a picture with a caption beneath it. At number ten on their list is Courtney Friel, a television hostess for the world poker tour. The picture they have of her is in a lacy tank top: fair enough. She’s obviously OK with the picture considering she modeled for it. Underneath the picure is a caption that says “Stop teasing us Courtney, tear those laces off!”

The next featured profile is that of Evelyn Ng. Underneath her picture they put a quote that says, “Evelyn sure is one sweet ride…” Sadly, they did not even try to be creative with this comment, the only possible connotation for this remark is a sexual one. They also remarked in her profile that she won the WPT Ladies Night event and that, “Yup, she kicked ass. Asses that belong to Annie Duke and Kathy Liebert. Asses I don’t wanna see anytime soon. No matter how much they pay me to.” This hilarious joke about the physical assets of two of poker’s greatest female players was insulting to say the least.

At number 8 on their list is none other than Lily Elviro. This strong poker player who, besides being a strong poker player, is physically well endowed as well. The picture which they used for her was taken during a poker tournament she played in and shows her at the table holding a pair of cards. She is leaning forward a little showing a fair portion of her not so small breasts. Unable to resist, the comment beneath the photo says, “It’s hard for Lily to always carry a heavy set of puppies like that.” If it wasn’t for such brilliant writing most of us would completely miss out on such hard to miss features.

-Next on our list is an article written by Toby Bochan on her poker blog. This photo-article, featured on, is titled “The hottest women of poker”, and it is essentially an amateur photo gallery of professional femal poker players. The women featured in this article are Evelyn Ng, Shannon Elizabeth, Clonie Gowen, Jennifer Tilly, Liz Lieu, Vanessa Rousso, Isabelle Mercier, Cyndy Violette, Jennifer Harman, Annie Duke, Kristy Gazes, Chantel McNutty, and Jennefer “Jennicide” Leigh. Perhaps the most disturbing part about this gallery is not that these women have their pictures posted, but that none of the pictures were studio pictures. They all seem like photos that were taken in a clandestine manner on a digital camera. Does this strike anybody as creepy?

-Coming last on our list is none other than Full Tilt Poker, who recently issued a challenge between Paris Hilton and Clonie Gowen. Their hearts were definitely in the right place: they were to host a heads-up challenge between the two women and the winner would take the 0,000 prize and donate it to the charity of her choice. This sounds good, so why does this make our trash list? Well, if you go to the website, the page they created for this challenge has these two women stacked up next to each other. The title for their statistics is called their “Sexy Stats”, and just to make sure that the best poker player wins, they even added a “Who is sexier?” poll at the bottom of the page.

Thus concludes our trashy website list (NEED TO THINK OF A WAY TO PITCH THIS ARTICLE). Part IV will conclude “Women and Poker” by addressing what the future of women and poker may hold.

Build a Poker Bankroll | Poker Deposit Codes

It has never been so easy to build a poker bankroll. Many new players to online poker are very eager to get online and play in the top online poker rooms. Many new poker players are not aware of the numerous poker deposit bonuses that most of the poker rooms offer just by using poker deposit codes.

So where do you find poker deposit codes?

Many sites offer poker deposit codes in their reviews of top online poker rooms. By using the bonus code you can receive larger bonuses than what the actual poker site offers people who don’t use the codes. To visit a site that provides reviews and top online poker deposit codes click here!

Now let me talk about how to build a poker bankroll!

I remember the day I first started playing poker online and realized the potential to make some serious cash if I was patient enough. I remember reading a book about how to manage your poker bankroll online and it gave me some serious ideas. I ended up signing up to almost every poker site in order to minimize the amount of cash I was investing and maximize the amount of my online poker bankroll.

For example, almost all of the top online poker rooms today offer some type of incentive for new players to join. The reason behind this is because of the ridiculous amount of money these sites are actually making.

It is very simple, the more players they have playing for real money their profits increase exponentially. Therefore it is much easier today to build a poker bankroll, just by having the ease of access to the game.

So depending on the amount of money you wish to invest you can actually double your first time deposit on several of the Top Online Poker Rooms!. This was the reason why I signed up to several different sites.

You see most poker sites offer poker deposit codes and if you use these codes you will receive a bonus on a certain amount of money. So if you plan to invest more whether in the short term or long term it is wise to sign up to more than one site.

For example, if you happen to bust out on one site and have already claimed the bonus, why re-invest into that site when there are thousands of other places to claim a poker deposit bonus?

Instead of investing 00 on one site I ended up splitting it up between different sites and taking advantage of all the bonus offers. My patience and experience in poker allowed me to build a poker bankroll that I never imagined was possible!

By signing up to several top online poker rooms, and using the poker deopsit codes I found, I am now able to have variety in my online poker experience and this reduces my chances of going on serious online poker tilt! For anyone who knows about online poker, sometimes there can be some serious bad beats that really make you want to throw the laptop in front of a moving bus.

So, by having different sites to go to, if I find one site to be on a bad streak for the day I can shut it down for the day move to a different site and reduce my chance of going on super tilt.

Over the year’s I have played on several poker sites, which has given me the opportunity to understand which ones I can trust and which ones I feel are lagging behind. In today’s market of online poker rooms the competition is fierce and new and old players alike can take advantage of this. So remember, don’t just sign up to one site and invest all of your money into them. By doing this you are bound for failure.

If you plan to play poker online for money, invest in a variety of sites, and take advantage of their initial poker deposit codes, and you will most certainly build a poker bankroll larger than you imagined!

Poker: Party Poker – the Popular Poker

Party poker is one of the most popular poker games over the internet. What is party poker? If you are aware of MMORPGs, (more popularly known as Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game), then party poker is just like that. It is a Massive Multiplayer Online Poker Gaming. You can say that it is a kind of Mecca for poker players that don¡¯t have the time to go to casinos. Party poker is played by up to thousands of online poker gamers. It can also be compared to chatting, where you have the chance of joining chatting rooms, but in this case, you are supposed to join poker rooms.

I recommend party poker online, although there are some differences between playing party poker online and face-to-face poker. The difference relies on the bluffing. Because you can¡¯t see your opponents, you will not have the tell tale signs of their bluffs or can you have a reading of their card. Party poker online only gives us the very basic and fundamental laws of the game. Thus, a newbie can have a better chance of winning against a pro in an online game than in real life.

Party poker employs the basic poker rules, although some rooms have modified poker rules. It is good to first learn the basic poker rules and game play before engaging in serious betting online. However, if you are truly interested, there are party poker gaming rooms that are void of betting. These are strictly and purely gaming only. Party poker can also be compared to online casinos. The payments however are not chips, but are in cash. The payments, also known as bets are placed with the use of credit cards. Most of the party poker sites that are available recognize the standard credit cards.

What does party poker offer to a gamer? Hours and hours of fun! Whether you are a beginner in the game, or a serious poker player, party poker will be your poker gaming oasis. Maybe you want to learn about the intricate yet enjoyable game of poker but have no one to play it with. Don¡¯t worry, because party poker is actually a community in itself. It is a place where you can learn with other beginners. Party poker sites link hundreds, and even thousands of players. The abilities of these players also range from a complete beginner knowing nothing about poker, to advanced and pro players. However, one needs to be wary of your betting, because you might lose serious money in party pokers. The benefits really far outweigh the risks that are involved. Party poker can also reward you a lot of dollars, and might make your wallet fat.

So how does a person eager to play massive online poker do it? All party poker sites require poker gamers to download a poker gaming software. These gaming softwares differ from one party poker site to another. A poker gaming software is limited to that particular party poker site. So if you plan on playing on different sites, you will end up downloading numerous party poker softwares. Most party poker sites will require you to fill up a registration form. All the best party poker sites on the web are on members only basis. This membership will also require a membership fee. In the registration form, you will be asked your credit card number. This is how you will be deducted your losing bets. Your winning pot is transferred to your bank account directly.

Party poker sites earn millions of dollars a year because of thousands of patrons. Because party poker sites can operate online, you have the possibility of playing with poker enthusiasts from around the globe. Place your bets folks!

Poker: the Bible of a Poker Game

What comes first in your mind when you see posters with dogs gathered around in a table with card in hand or a typical Western scene wherein cowboys smoke while playing cards at a saloon?

These kinds of scenario only points to one classic game of cards, nothing else but the poker game. No game could be visually described as that of a poker game. It is almost everywhere. In the United States, it’s like it is already a part of the American way of living.

Poker game is one game everybody loves. It is played in every card rooms across the world. And with its growing popularity, it even invaded the Internet.

Basically, a poker game is the most popular in a class of games known as the vying game wherein players who fully conceal or partially conceal their cards then make bets into a central pot. Poker game ends when the player with the best combination of cards wins.

Like any typical vying game, one or more players are asked to put a primary amount of money into the pot before the cards are dealt. And like most card games, the cards are shuffled, and then cut, and the correct number of cards are dealt facing down to the players.

The rotation of the players is usually done on a clockwise manner with a button marking the next player who will have to deal and bet next. It is usually after the initial deal that several rounds of betting will commence.

However, the poker game players will be able to develop a strategy in some way in between rounds, by being dealt additional cards or replacing cards that were previously dealt. During every betting rounds in a poker game, a current bet amount will always be present. This refers to the total amount of money bet in a particular round by the player who bet last on that same round. For some tracking reason, the players are required to not place their stakes directly into the pot. This is known as slashing the pot. The poker game players are asked to place the stakes in front of them instead. When the betting round is over, the stakes will be gathered and placed into the pot.

At the end of the last betting round of a certain poker game, in the event that there remains one player, there will be a showdown. This means that all the players will disclose their previously hidden cards and evaluate their “hands” or card combinations. The player with the best combination wins the pot. Though, this rule depends on the poker game variant being played.

In a poker game, the combination of cards are the essential part of the game. This will determine if you can win the pot or not.

The highest card combination in a poker game is the straight flush. This means that you have five cards in suit and sequence in your hand. Next to that is the four of a kind combination wherein you have four cards of the same rank and one idler.

The third highest card combination in a poker game is the full house. Here you must have three cards of one rank and two of another. Flush card combination comes next having five cards in suit but not necessarily in sequence. Then the straight card combination with five cards in sequence but not in suit.

The three of a kind combination, threes, triplet, trips, or in any way you want to call it as long as it is a combination of three cards of the same rank plus two of two different ranks are considered the next highest card combination in a poker game.

Two pair, one pair, and a high card, meaning no combination, ranks the lowest in a poker game.

As much as the poker game has its variety of card combinations, it has also its variety of poker games. The most common of these poker game variations is the Draw Poker variations. Here, the players receive a full hand during an initial deal but eventually discards some of those cards and will be replaced with new cards from the deck.

Stud Poker variations differs from the draw poker game in terms of card dealing and betting. In this variety of poker game, after the players are dealt with initial amount of cards, they are given one more card on each completed betting round until seven cards are dealt. This, however, varies when playing a five stud poker game variation.

On the other hand, Shared-card Poker Game variations deals with small amount cards on each player. After which, the cards are placed in the center of the table that are common to every players.

The last two poker game variations are the miscellaneous poker variation and the non-poker game variation. Miscellaneous poker game variations are poker games that use the standard ranking of card combinations though not being dealt in the same way as the other poker game variations. While the non-poker game variation does not use the standard ranking of poker hands so as to verify the winner.

Whatever poker game you play, it is still a poker game, so addicting yet so gratifying. It just takes a combination of skills and luck to outwit the other players. As most veterans in poker game contends, if you cannot spot the lose within the first hour at the table, then, with outmost probability that you are the loser. So better be equipped with money and skills in playing a poker game than to have money without even a single skill about poker games.

Poker: the Colour of Poker Money

“What’s that father?” a little boy once asked his father. “Can I play with them?”

The father replied, “No, son, it is not a toy! It is money, my boy!” The boy hurried off to play outside, though, wondering why his father considered those colorful chips as money.

Most children in America grew up with different kinds of colored chips. This colored chips represents money in the casinos. For example, a player who wants to play poker has to buy some chips to be used when betting. And because this is the kind of money that is being used during a game in the casino, particularly poker, others eventually call it poker money.

Poker money comes in various shades of blue, red, and other colors usually seen in the casinos.

In a particular poker game, a player’s poker money account is comprised of real cash and real chips. Normally, players could convert their cash to chips and vice versa. This can be done any time the player wants to do transactions except during a game.

Poker money arrives after a player settles down on a table and is ready to play poker. This poker money, in terms of chips, is being laid out in front of the concerned player.

However, before proceeding into playing poker, every player must make a deposit for his poker money.

In a live poker game where players get to play facing each other, the poker money are converted easily from cash to chips and vice versa on counters provided in the casino.

On the other hand, online poker games have different ways of managing poker money. Most of the online poker websites require their players to have their poker money accounts through deposits. Generally, these can be done into two categories. One category of depositing poker money is through direct methods wherein players use a credit card or draft in order to deposit money. The other category of depositing poker money is through a 3rd party services like NETeller or prepaid ATM which acts like Internet banks. Here, players can do transactions such as depositing poker money and transferring funds to online poker Web sites.

There are six deposit methods usually used when dealing with poker money by means of a 3rd party.

First of its kind is the Neteller. This method of depositing poker money is usually available on many Internet sites. Neteller offers players the choice of cashing out directly poker money into their account. Opening a Neteller account is like having an online wallet.

The other method you could consider is the MyCitadel wherein online poker players need not check their mails for drafts. MyCitadel is a payment system that manages US and Canadian customers mostly catering to poker money related matters. Here, poker players can have their poker money by purchasing chips online.

Then there is the FirePay, a Web based cash account. FirePay is great site wherein players with fund accounts from a United States bank can directly open a poker money account with them. Funds can be transferred directly from a U.S. bank account.

You also have the option in using a prepaid ATM. The difference with prepaid ATM is that players get to deposit their poker money to an ATM card and not just a Web site. When doing cash outs, it goes directly to your card. And the good thing about it is that the prepaid ATM works with most local ATM machines.

If you are not so convenient in using ATM, you could opt for credit cards. Poker money deposits can be easily managed without having a 3rd party. Or better yet, you could use the bank draft or check wherein your poker money deposits are better secured. Plus most Web sites offer 10% bonus when you deposit poker money through this method.

Last option would be the UseMyBank method wherein it also guarantees secured, fast, and easy transactions. Though, only those who have Canadian online bank accounts can be eligible.

And after you are through making poker money deposit, and maybe playing some hands of poker, there are online poker Web site that will give you a choice if you want to cash out your poker money at once or remove your funds at the site if in case you still want to come back and play. With the six deposit mode mentioned, you can be assured of having your poker money, whether chips or cash, remain exactly like you left them.

So, when the time comes you have finally decided to play poker online or in a live poker room in the casino, try to think of ways how to manage your poker money. After all, those chips are not just plain plastics. Poker money is exactly the reason why you have played poker in the first place.

Love and Poker: for What They’re Worth… Part 1

As a game played all around the world, poker and people are viewed differently from continent to continent.

Western anecdotes of love and poker are innocent high school drama stories compared to odd tragedies that are still taking in other parts of the world.

Contrary to the Western superstition that being lucky in poker means being unlucky in love and vice versa, love and relationships are occurrences we have no control of, so, lucky or unlucky in love, we always have at least something of the sort going on or keeping us searching or waiting for it during our whole lives.

Poker, on the other hand, seduces only some, and they have to love it passionately and devote most of their lives to it, which is tricky when combining it with human relationships.

Even though Western women have opened up about poker to the point of becoming excellent full-time players who compete in world championships head to head with male poker legends, there is a great number of women who are not only oblivious to poker but actually see it as a curse, fearing their family will hit bankruptcy and their husbands go gambling mad because of it. There are also men who have no desire to be bothered with their wives’ poker lives, and others who have tried to learn it for years to no avail, but have drawn the line between their wives’ playing and family life.

Unlike some perspectives that claim that poker is just like anything else in our lives and it is not to blame for divorce or separation, most married poker players agree that it’s not as simple as that.

For couples in which only one of them is a poker fan, there are always concerns about bankroll risk and fluctuations, misconceptions about winnings, bad beats and bankroll replenishments, demands and resentment over time spent playing or thinking about it versus time spent with spouses and family, mood swings during losing streaks, lying about expenses, losses and winnings, and of course, the possibility of poker becoming an addiction that would threaten the relationship and the player’s sanity.

According to poker player and blogger Tanya Peck, better known as MissT74 online, poker is much more than a hobby, saying that “while non-poker players can’t understand how someone is willing to throw away a relationship for the game of poker, poker players can’t understand how someone isn’t willing to understand the deep desire and passion that poker seems to bring out of us.” And although she wouldn’t throw away her marriage for the game, she would actually consider separation from anybody who would limit or disrespect her passion for anything in her life. She believes the key to making poker and love work is to negotiate it openly with your partner to determine needs, boundaries and compromises that need to be determined before any misunderstandings or resentments arise, so that both parties feel their needs are being met.

Other players such as Craig Cunningham, believe in a recipe for poker-love success:

Express what poker means to you and let your spouse also express his/her feelings about it; Determine poker limits;

Properly manage bankrolls;

Erase online hand histories

Bringing your wife flowers on a regular basis;

Making your spouse first priority by engaging in their life;

Watch less TV poker;

Arrange weekends to have the kids away from home so your spouse can do his/her thing, or sending them to their favorite place like fancy spas, or bowling allies;

Tackle bigger relationship problems that may be diagnosed by poker;

Pay attention to your spouse when needed.

Both players are right about the need to compromise, but in relationships where poker is one more issue to put up with, negotiating may not be that easy, but that also means that communication is not working overall and needs to be prioritized. In the case of couples who cannot handle the pressure or balance both love and poker, leaving the game or the relationship is usually the chosen path.

For couples in which both people play and love poker, this balance is much easier to achieve, and some are able to develop such team work that they reach a very comforting and unexpected level of happiness and fulfillment.

Poker-loving couples like Karina & Chip Jett, Michael “The Grinder” & Lily Mizrachi, Jennifer Harman & Marco Traniello, Marsha Waggoner &  Kenna James, Phil Laak & Jennifer Tilly and Bob & Maureen Feduniak have enjoyed a life of considerably less hardship and unbelievable solidarity, to the point of having an almost argument-free relationship.

How do they do it? Well, in most cases, one of them was initiated in poker by their more experienced partners, which enabled them to lean and trust each other in ways regular couples don’t usually experience. When couples teach each other about poker, that tends to eliminate unnecessary miscommunication between them, since they get to know each other deeper by opening up to being taught, corrected and backed up, and this builds a bond hard to break or replace. Besides, being crazy about each other also helps to establish a solid relationship. Do they rely on a recipe for success? Not really, they only recommend going with the flow and cherishing each other, and the rest will fall into place.

Now, on a cheesier note, let’s not forget the occasional Hollywood fairy tale, which nowadays translates in reality tale in TV. As I am sure you have all heard, Pamela Anderson’s latest cupid attack occurred during a poker game, where she lost 0,000 to her then platonic friend Rick Solomon: he offered to drop the bet if she kissed him and we all know the rest. Even though they are now divorced, poker acted as cupid, to a point of making them believe they were made for one-another. It makes you wonder about the aphrodisiac power of poker.

Talking about poker versatility, there is now something you can buy to poker-up your relationship: Poker for Lovers, the Romantic Poker Game for Couples. According to MSN shopping, the game is strictly made for 2 people, and it includes a card deck, 30 blue chips, and 30 pink poker chips. According to the only review posted, the game gets players to interact in fun, intimate ways, but it was only granted half a star for the review ranking.

Adding to the cheesy notes, now single poker players don’t have to worry about having to convince their partners to accept their poker side or about introducing them to the game; they can mingle with their own kind and even find their match at You only have to sign up with username and password, and you can post your profile and pictures for potential matches to browse you up! The site also offers a fun love calculator (which measures your compatibility with the members you like), dating tips, free poker games, poker odds, testimonies, and also a cupid service –a personalized compatibility matching aid provided by the site’s cupid agent.

Thus, whether you think love and poker can be a perfect match just by following a recipe or buying a kit or think love is an incurable disease, getting along with your partners and feeling good about your life should be priorities 1 & 2.
